China Unveils New Weapons: DF-61 ‘Guam Killer’, Hypersonic Missiles, and Drones

China has showcased its expanding military arsenal in a grand parade attended by global leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, China revealed a series of cutting-edge weapons, from intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) to hypersonic systems, advanced laser technology, and futuristic drones.

Among the highlights were three new ICBMs — DF-5C, DF-26D, and DF-61. Of these, the DF-61, dubbed the “Guam Killer”, drew the most attention as it is capable of directly striking the U.S. naval base in Guam, sparking strategic concerns in the West.

Strategic Intent Behind the Display

According to Alexander Neill, a researcher at the Pacific Forum, China is steadily positioning its missile and rocket forces as the backbone of its strategic deterrence. The primary objective is to counterbalance the overwhelming dominance of the U.S. Navy, which operates the world’s largest and most advanced fleet, including aircraft carriers and carrier strike groups.

Although China remains behind in naval power, the unveiling of advanced missile technology signals its intent to narrow the gap and project power in contested waters.

Second-Strike Capability

Experts suggest Beijing’s strategy goes beyond deterrence. The country is also working to strengthen its second-strike capability — the ability to retaliate with nuclear force even after sustaining a first strike. This significantly enhances China’s credibility as a nuclear power on the global stage.

Hypersonic and Drone Advancements

For the first time, China publicly displayed the WZ-17 hypersonic glide vehicle and the WZ-19 hypersonic cruise missile, highlighting its progress in next-generation warfare.

Additionally, China revealed the AJX002 underwater autonomous drone, capable of launching attacks from beneath the sea. Analysts believe such technology could pose a serious challenge to U.S. and allied naval operations in the Pacific.

Global Reactions

The unveiling has triggered debates in Western defense circles over the future relevance of U.S. aircraft carriers and strike groups. Many analysts argue that with China’s growing missile capabilities, these massive warships could increasingly become “sitting ducks” in potential conflicts.

By combining long-range strike power, hypersonic speed, and advanced drone systems, China is signaling its ambition to reshape the balance of power in the Asia-Pacific region.
